NY Giants Offensive Coordinator: Jason Garrett

Hot Seat Temperature: Very Hot

Jason Garrett is firmly on the hot seat in 2021.

There’s no other way around it. Garrett commanded and led the NY Giants’ worse offense in over 15 years.

The NY Giants seemed to handpick Garrett starting from the very top with ownership support from the Mara and the Tisch families. Garrett is a former NY Giants’ backup quarterback who also was the Cowboys’ Head Coach for over a decade.

Garrett initially interviewed for the team’s Head Coach opening after the team fired Pat Shurmur. Garrett even got a crack at the head coaching job before Joe Judge who of course won over the NY Giants ownership and front office to be named their Head Coach. There is obviously a lot of strong belief and mutual respect in Jason Garrett and his ability to coach.

There has always been some speculation that ownership may have heavily recommended or highly encouraged Joe Judge to add Garrett as his Offensive Coordinator. It was Judge’s first time being a Head Coach, it’s not crazy to think the Giants leadership brass wanted to supplement with Joe Judge with recent NFL Head Coaches.

Garrett struggled mightily in his new role in 2020. His offense lacked creativity, using elements of surprise, there was little presnap motion, and they barely used deception in their passing scheme. The Giants couldn’t keep the chains moving and they were outright terrible on third downs. Putting this all together, it’s no surprise the Giants’ offense was so bad last year.

This season, Garrett has no excuses.

His personnel issues’ blame game from last year won’t fly with Coach Judge this year.

The NY Giants have their most talented offense on paper in at least three years. They are now stocked at running back, wide receiver, and tight end with proper starting players and legitimate depth at each position. Jones returns at quarterback for year two in Garrett’s scheme and the same offensive line is back from last year minus Kevin Zeitler.

Garrett’s tenure in Dallas ended ugly and he became the butt of many jokes on NFL Twitter. Joe Judge already fired Garrett’s guy from Dallas in Marc Colombo, so he has shown he’s not afraid to make a move midseason. If Garrett’s offense doesn’t show immense immediately, he may be the next Cowboy-turned-Giant to be shown the door and fired in-season.
