5 NY Giants breakout candidates: Darius Slayton finally flying under radar?
Why Slayton won’t:
There’s certainly a downside for Slayton to all of that talent added at wide receiver.
It remains to be seen where Slayton stands in Jones’ target hierarchy, especially now that the young quarterback finally has a true No. 1, gamebreaking wide receiver at the ready.
Even when he was arguably Jones’ top target the past two seasons, Slayton never sniffed 1,000 yards and saw a dramatic dip in touchdowns from eight to three from his rookie to sophomore seasons.
The NY Giants hope and believe that Jones will make great strides this season, and if he does, all boats will rise … Including Slayton’s. However, if Jones can’t cut down on turnovers and careless mistakes, and spends much more time looking in Golladay, Shepard, and/or Toney’s direction, obviously Slayton’s production is going to dip even further.
Slayton finds himself in uncharted territory, knocked down a rung in terms of Jones’ target hierarchy. there’s a chance he’ll plateau or even regress as a result.
