NY Giants player #2 to monitor during training camp: Sterling Shephard, WR

Sterling Shephard is the team’s longest-tenured receiver at this stage, dating back to the days the NY Giants last made the postseason with Eli Manning under center.

Shepard was the presumed WR1 for Jones in his rookie season, but Darius Slayton has since made inroads.

This camp will be an important one for Shephard to not get pushed down the totem pole further with Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, and John Ross all joining the WR room this offseason.

NY Giants player #3 to monitor during training camp: Evan Engram, TE

Like Shephard, Evan Engram needs to stave off competition at the TE position. While Kyle Rudolph–the longtime Minnesota Vikings weapon for Kirk Cousins–is expected to be brought along slowly due to a foot injury, he isn’t expected to miss time this fall.

It’s of the utmost importance Engram takes advantage of the added reps in training camp to establish himself as a top option for Daniel Jones with more hands in the mix for his tosses.

NY Giants player #4 to monitor during training camp: Nick Gates, C

Nick Gates could be the long-term solution at the center position along the front five. He was able to transition to the C spot flawlessly in 2020 after clawing his way onto the final roster as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Jonotthan Harrison’s injury woes heading into 2021 underscore the need for Gates to maintain his level of play. Otherwise unproven rookie Brett Heggie will have to answer the call following a strong senior year at Florida.
