Running back Saquon Barkley and linebacker Blake Martinez will be among the NY Giants not on the field when the team holds its first training camp practice

The NY Giants will take the practice fields for the first time Wednesday, opening training camp ahead of the 2021 NFL season, but it will be nowhere close to the full roster suiting up.

Tuesday was a mixed bag news day for the Giants, ahead of Wednesday’s practice, as rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney was activated from the COVID-19/reserve list, but veteran linebacker Blake Martinez and safety Joshua Kalu were added to the list.

NY Giants head coach Joe Judge said that while Toney is back in the building, the team will take it slow in terms of putting him back out there during practice.

“He’s with us today in the building,” Judge said Tuesday. “We have a number of guys, for different reasons that we’re going to take it a little slower coming off of that protocol.”

Who else will miss the NY Giants’ first training camp practice?

In addition to Martinez and Kalu being added to the COVID-19/reserve list, running back Saquon Barkley, tight end Kyle Rudolph, offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison, offensive tackle Matt Peart, linebacker Oshane Ximines, rookie cornerback Aaron Robinson all open camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Meanwhile, linebackers Ryan Anderson and Reggie Ragland were added to the non-football injury list Tuesday.

Early practices during training camp will focus on conditioning and light drills, during a ramp up period that was collectively bargained between the NFL and NFLPA, but it will still mean that several key players won’t be participating early in camp.
