Versatility to be name of the game along offensive line

Expect to see the NY Giants’ shuffle through some interesting offensive line combinations this summer.

Judge said prior to practice that Shane Lemieux and Will Hernandez will be working in at both the right and left guard spots, and that Matt Peart and Andrew Thomas will see snaps at both tackle positions.

"“You’re going to see all the tackles play right and left,” Judge said. “You’re going to see the guards play right and left. You’re going to see Nick Gates at times, we may flex him to guard or tackle. We’re always building our flexibility offensively to make sure that if something happens, we can interchange parts and keep on moving. Who knows, we may pick up somebody in the season who can play only left guard, or the strength is only left guard.”"

Cross-training offensive linemen is unique in the NFL, especially during a training camp setting, where preparation for the regular season reaches a crescendo. But, it seems Judge is building gin flexibility in case of injuries up front to be able to seamlessly shuffle personnel or optionality when it comes to bringing in a veteran, if necessary, to be able to plug and play.

Will Hernandez says he lost 20 pounds training this offseason, and isn’t worried about training at both guard positions this summer.

“I upped my training a lot more intensity, a lot more conditioning,” Hernandez says. “I did a lot of things different, ate different, but at the end of the day, it’s just training for football, practicing my craft, and just doing it on the other side.”
