NY Giants signing Alfred Morris, which could be bad news for Gary Brightwell
Alfred Morris, 32, returns to the NY Giants after he spent time with the team late last season and played meaningful snaps
The NY Giants plan to sign veteran running back Alfred Morris for a return stint after he spent last season with the team, according to a report from NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.
Morris, 32, was signed by the Giants last season in the wake of Saquon Barkley and Devonta Freeman suffering injuries, and while he rushed for 238 yards and a touchdown, he averaged just 4.3 yards per carry.
Given that Barkley is expected to return from a torn ACL, and the NY Giants signed Devontae Booker on the first day of free agency this spring, Morris’ signing could make an uphill climb for sixth-round pick Gary Brightwell to make the roster even steeper.
The NY Giants also have Corey Clement on the roster, as well, which makes this quite the crowded running back room as training camp gets underway.
It will be fascinating to watch during this training camp how the pecking order develops behind Barkley, as the star running back remains on the PUP list, and how Morris fits into it. Booker would appear to be first in line as Barkley’s top backup, but time will tell how the carry-share works itself out.
Through the first nine seasons of his career, Morris has rushed for 1,429 yards and 35 touchdowns, after being chosen by Washington in the sixth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
