Levine Toilolo was carted off from Wednesday night’s practice, and the NY Giants say that his 2021 season is over after tearing his Achilles tendon
NY Giants tight end Levine Toilolo tore his Achilles tendon during Wednesday night’s practice, the team says, ending his 2021 season before it had the chance to begin.
Toilolo had been fighting for a roster spot in what has become a bit of a crowded position group, but that has taken a significant depth hit in recent weeks following Kelvin Benjamin’s sudden retirement and now Toilolo’s injury.
Last season, in 16 games, including two starts, Toilolo caught five of his six targets for 46 yards. The NY Giants restructured Toilolo’s contract this offseason, and he was set to make $1.35 million in 2021, including $650,000 guaranteed.
Prior to Wednesday’s practice, the NY Giants signed former Penn State quarterback and New Orleans Saints draft pick Tommy Stevens to play tight end.
How Levine Toilolo’s injury impacts NY Giants depth at tight end
In Toilolo’s absence, Kyle Rudolph is likely Evan Engram’s top backup and most likely to see the field in two tight end sets.
Rudolph has yet to take part in a practice, and began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, after undergoing offseason foot surgery shortly after signing with the NY Giants this spring.
The competition for the NY Giants’ third tight end spot is now likely between Kaden Smith and Stevens.
