NY Giants potential cap casualty #3: Gary Brightwell, RB

Gary Brightwell was already going to have to show that his senior year regression in the Pac-12 with the Arizona Wildcats was the result of the 2020 college football season being distorted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

His yards per game dropping a yard and a half from his junior year to his senior year was not simply the result of increased volume. His sophomore season coupled his 2020 volume with his 2019 efficiency.

Now, with Alfred Morris back in town, chances are not great that he will cash in on the full $3.6 million+ his contract dictates is coming to him should he stick as GMENHQ editor Matt Lombardo notes:

"Given that Barkley is expected to return from a torn ACL, and the NY Giants signed Devontae Booker on the first day of free agency this spring, Morris’ signing could make an uphill climb for sixth-round pick Gary Brightwell to make the roster even steeper."

Opportunities should exist for Brightwell beyond even this summer, but the crowded NY Giants RB room will probably force him out onto the post-training camp free-agent market.
