The NY Giants waived 2018 fifth-round pick R.J. McIntosh, ahead of the team’s first preseason game

R.J. McIntosh’s time with the NY Giants came to an end Wednesday, when the team released its fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

McIntosh saw limited playing time during his three-year tenure with the Giants, failing to climb the depth chart and provide much of a boost to a fledgling pass-rush.

It’s hard not to view McIntosh as a miss for general manager Dave Gettleman in the NFL Draft, specially given the NY Giants’ struggles to build a consistently dominant pass-rush over his three year tenure as GM.

In 18 career games, McIntosh didn’t make a single start, and finishes his NY Giants career with 18 total tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

This summer, McIntosh was seemingly buried on the defensive line depth chart. Not helping McIntosh’s cause is the fact that defensive line might be the deepest position group on the NY Giants’ roster.

McIntosh’s release creates opportunity for the likes of David Moa and Niko Lalos to potentially push for a spot on the 53-man roster, with a strong preseason and impressive finish to training camp, over the next several weeks.
