NY Giants sitting Daniel Jones for preseason opener vs. Jets
Daniel Jones won’t be in the lineup when the NY Giants host the Jets Saturday night in the preseason opener
NY Giants head coach Joe Judge told reporters Thursday that starting quarterback Daniel Jones will not play in the team’s exhibition opener Saturday against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Judge has previously suggested that Saturday’s game will be treated by the Giants similarly to how teams used to handle the fourth preseason game, because for the first time this summer there will only be three exhibition contests.
From the sounds of it, Jones and the starters won’t see anything close to a full game’s worth of work until the preseason finale.
In Jones’ absence, look for backup quarterbacks Mike Glennon and Clayton Thorson to get extended playing time in this game.
To date, Jones has had an up-and-down training camp, but seems to be making progress over the past week and a half, stacking some strong practices with strong throws. Given that wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney have been limited, and the offensive line has struggled, it makes a lot of sense to keep Jones on the sideline this week.
However, the NY Giants will hold off on getting a look at Jones against an opponent until at least next week’s joint practices with the Cleveland Browns and Week 2 of the preseason slate.
The Jets and Giants kickoff at 7 p.m. Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
