NT — Austin Johnson over Danny Shelton

When impactful interior defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson agreed to join the Minnesota Vikings this offseason, the Giants needed to find a way to supplement his departure.

In comes Danny Shelton, a former first round pick in 2015 who has seen time in Cleveland, New England and most recently, Detroit. Shelton saw action in 44% of the defensive snaps for the Lions in 2020 despite only playing in 12 games.

Johnson, on the other hand, played in 21% of the defensive snaps for the Giants in 2020, 268 less plays in total than Shelton.

If the depth chart is any indication, however, which it may or may not be, Johnson has potentially played well enough in training camp so far to buy himself more time on the field.

Whether it be Johnson, Shelton or an even mix of the two, Giants fans should be rooting for both players to continue pushing each one another.
