Clayton Thorson suffered a concussion in the NY Giants’ preseason opening loss to the Jets, prior to Brian Lewerke signing on Sunday

The NY Giants Sunday night signed former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke, following a rough outing from backup Clayton Thorson in a 12-7 loss to the Jets.

Lewerke’s signing made more sense, when news of Thorson suffering a concussion during the exhibition opener was reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Monday morning.

Thorson finished 5-of-16 passing for 72 yards and a touchdown, but also struggled to move the offense against the Jets’ reserve defense and was consistently under pressure.

Meanwhile, Lewerke, signed last spring as an undrafted free agent by the New England Patriots, has yet to appear in an NFL game. Lewerke signed with the Alphas of The Spring League this spring, and could see his first NFL action this week.

Adding Lewerke gives the NY Giants another option as a possible practice squad quarterback, and another arm to bring to Cleveland for this week’s joint practices with the Browns.

The NY Giants square off against the Browns in Cleveland on Sunday at 1 p.m.
