The Odell Beckham Jr. trade certainly changed the outlook of the NY Giants and the Cleveland Browns, just over two years ago

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — This week will be reunion of sorts, as the NY Giants will spend two days practicing against the Cleveland Browns leading up to Sunday’s preseason game, and that means the first look at star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. since the 2019 blockbuster trade.

“I’m happy,” Gettleman said Tuesday, of the trade.

Since Beckham was traded in exchange for Jabrill Peppers and the draft picks that became edge rusher that became Dexter Lawrence, Oshane Ximines, the Giants have invested $45 million guaranteed in Kenny Golladay, and a first-round pick in Kadarius Toney to rebuild a receiving corps that has underachieved since Beckham’s departure.

But, both NY Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and owner John Mara stand behind the decision that dramatically altered the fortunes of both franchises.

“It’s Dexter, X-Man has had injury issues,” Gettleman said. “But, when he’s been out there he’s shown promise, and Jabrill’s done a hell of a job.”

Beckham caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns in his first season with the Browns, prior to a torn ACL ending his 2020 campaign after catching 23 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns in 2020.

As the NY Giants continue a rebuild, after sinking significant resources into rebuilding the wide receiver position, the Browns are on the cusp of a Super Bowl caliber season with Beckham headlining their receiving corps.

Mara, who had to sign off on trading one of the most recognizable figures in the recent history of the franchise, shared Gettleman’s optimism.

“I think that it’s a trade that will work out well for both sides,” Mara said. “Obviously the players we’ve added have been good contributors for us. I expect Odell to have a great season, and I still have a great relationship with him.”
