Round 4: Elerson Smith, Outside Linebacker

Taking one pass rusher wasn’t gonna be enough for the NY Giants’ draft plans in 2021. They focused on upgrading the position and used a second draft choice on Elerson Smith from Northern Iowa.

Smith is a raw, but extremely talented edge rusher who is active all over the field. He can make plays in the run game while also relentlessly chase down opposing quarterbacks. Smith did not get to play in 2020 as his season at UNI was canceled due to COVID-19.

Smith has yet to practice much at all during training camp. Just like Toney and Robinson, Smith has struggled with staying healthy and injuries have marred his first NFL training camp. He was expected to compete for a serious role with meaningful snaps in the NY Giants’ edge rusher rotation.

Now, his projected role is unclear at this point. Nothing else matters for Smith but to get back onto the football field. Look for Elerson Smith to get healthy soon and start contributing to the Giants’ edge rotation sooner than later.
