Adoree’ Jackson sprained his ankle during the NY Giants’ first joint practice with the New England Patriots, which could hamper depth at cornerback

NY Giants cornerback Adoree’ Jackson sprained his ankle Wednesday, during the first of two joint practices with the New England Patriots ahead of Sunday’s preseason finale.

Jackson, signed as a free agent back in March, is being counted on to start on the perimeter opposite James Bradberry in the Giants‘ revamped secondary, and depth behind the two veterans is quite thin.

While the NY Giants acquired Keion Crossen in a trade last week with the Houston Texans and swapped cornerbacks with the Green Bay Packers, in a trade that sent Isaac Yiadom to the Packers in exchange for Josh Johnson, none are proven outside starters.

Even if Jackson doesn’t miss time, the NY Giants would be wise to scour the waiver wire for veterans who are capable of providing quality depth on the outside.

If Jackson is forced to miss Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, here’s a look at the best available free agent cornerbacks the NY Giants can sign to fill the void:

Prince Amukamara

The NY Giants very nearly reunited with Prince Amukamara last summer, prior to signing Logan Ryan, instead, during the final days of training camp.

Amukamara, 32, has been out of the league since 2019, when he started 15 games for the Chicago Bears. That season, Amukamara produced 53 total tackles, and forced a fumble. But, opposing quarterbacks produced a 102.3 passer rating when targeting Amukamara, which might have figured into the NY Giants’ decision not to sign him last summer.

However, if Jackson looks like he’ll miss time, the organization might turn to its first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft as a short-term fix.
