NY Giants Sign Matt Skura to Practice Squad
The NY Giants may have another starting interior option for the offensive line.
The NY Giants have completely changed the outlook of their offensive line’s depth and maybe their starting lineup as well.
The Giants are expected to sign Matt Skura to the practice squad, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
The Giants will add Skura to their 16-man practice squad. The move comes just days after the Dolphins released Skura who signed this offseason with a 1-year, $1.75 million contract.
Skura is a four-year NFL veteran from Duke. He was undrafted in 2016 and made the Ravens practice squad as a rookie. He started in 2017 and ever since for the Ravens. He only started 16 games once, back in 2018, he’s missed 13 games in his three other seasons.
Skura has been Lamar Jackson’s center for his entire career. The 2019 MVP exchanged the ball with Skura before every play, so he’s had some real NFL impact already. He’s played in 54 games and started 51 of them.
He’s been a part of one of the NFL’s most consistent and balanced blocking teams in the league lately. Skura helped pave the way for Lamar’s MVP season, his back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons, along with the league’s top-ranked run game for multiple years.
Skura is joined by Kenny Wiggins, Jake Burton, Brett Heggie, and Jackson Barton as linemen on the practice squad. Skura has more experience than these four players combined so his status on the scout team should end much differently.
I expect Skura to quickly make the Giants’ active roster as he has the pedigree to play and possibly start. Shane Lemieux is still dealing with injuries and may not be ready to play in Week 1 with a partially torn patellar tendon. Skura could take his spot in his absence if he’s not ready to go.
Matt Skura is another intriguing depth signing for the NY Giants’ maligned offensive line. They already swung two trades this week with Billy Price and Ben Bredeson headed to New York. It’s a totally different outlook on the OL depth from last week. The team added three new faces and Skura could see the field with the NY Giants much quicker than expected.
