NY Giants vs. Broncos takeaways: Daniel Jones fumble proves costly in loss
Broncos took advantage of mismatches as end of half aggressiveness pays off
When the Broncos’ offense lined up, coming out of a timeout, on 4th down and 2 from the Giants’ 49-yard line, it was easy to assume that Vic Fangio was trying to draw New York’s defense offsides … Instead, Teddy Bridgewater hit Courtland Sutton in a mismatch against Logan Ryan for a 14-yard gain, a first down, and Denver’s march was on.
Following Bridgewater’s gutty fourth down conversion, the Broncos systematically picked apart the NY Giants’ defense on a five-play blitzkrieg that culminated 27 seconds later with a Bridgwater touchdown pass to Tim Patrick to give Denver a 10-7 lead heading into the half.
Along the way, Denver managed to isolate Sutton against Julian Love, Jerry Jeudy in open space, and opened a soft spot in the Giants’ zone for Patrick to catch Bridgewater’s touchdown pass after first rolling Bridgewater to his left.
The final possession of the first half was a chess match, one the NY Giants badly lost.
Denver went on to possess the ball for nearly an hour of real time, from the end of the first half to their first possession of the second, running 24 plays and scoring 14 points over that stretch.
