The NY Giants could be on the verge of making a really curious decision, by signing Isaiah Wilson
The NY Giants are nonstop looking for help on the offensive line. They are now expected to add Isaiah Wilson, the Tennessee Titans’ 2020 1st round pick.
If this is the best the Giants can do, this is a headscratcher. Wilson was the 29th pick just over a year ago. He’s only 22 years old and is a former New York native, growing up in Brooklyn and going to Poly Tech.
Wilson was Georgia’s right tackle for two seasons in 2018 and 2019. Across him was Andrew Thomas on the left side of the Bulldogs’ line, something that is now coming to New York.
Wilson also played directly against Lorenzo Carter and Azeez Ojulari in practice for numerous years. He has familiarity with numerous former Georgia players and coaches on this staff. In fact, it was Rob Sale who recruited Wilson to Georgia, who’s now again his offensive line coach for the Giants. There are a lot of dots connecting here, so it’s no surprise the Giants gave him a shot to resurrect his NFL career.
Wilson spent last year working through the COVID/Reserve list two separate times and he only played four total snaps. He had a tumultuous career in Tennessee lasting under a full calendar year. He was widely seen as the biggest bust and most disappointing player in the entire 2020 draft.
Wilson was arrested numerous times last year. He was caught at a college party trying to flee the scene, he had a DUI in September, he led the cops on a 140 MPH car chase in January while in possession of drugs, and then again tried fleeing the cops in March for speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving, reckless conduct, possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana and possession and use of drug-related objects.
All in all, it was as bad an NFL start any player can ask for.
In February of 2021, Wilson then tweeted he would no longer play football for the Titans but since deleted the tweet. He was traded to the Dolphins for a 2021 7th round pick. He was cut no less than three days from Miami after the trade, after refusing to show up to his workout and other agreed-upon commitments before signing his contract.
Wilson is a troubled person but recently posted an Instagram video vowing to make up for his past mistakes and get back to football. Isaiah worked out for the Colts last week and the Giants saw enough to keep him and add him to the practice squad. It’s a no-risk, possibly rewarding move that the Giants can afford to take a flier on.
Going back home to New York and playing with several college teammates will help Isaiah Wilson out. It’ll be a much-needed support system he didn’t have in Tennessee. Only time will tell
