After drafting a running back in the 1st round, it made sense for Gettleman to take Hernandez, as offensive line help was a major need as aforementioned. The issue with the product from UTEP is that he’s plateaued as a guard over the last couple years following what was a promising rookie season.

On the surface, the pick itself wasn’t bad from a positional standpoint, but from a talent level, it hasn’t quite worked out. Following two years as the starting left guard, Hernandez was benched for 2020 5th round pick Shane Lemieux about midway through the 2020 season.

On the bright side, Hernandez embraced his new position as right guard heading into this season and it’s worked out so far, as he’s been fairly reliable. Despite that, the pick of Barkley made this pick all the more important for Gettleman’s legacy.

If Gettleman went with Quenton Nelson in the 1st round, and still wanted to address the running back position, Nick Chubb (2.3) would’ve been a nice fit, as he’s been a dominant, physical back in his time with the Cleveland Browns.

Other potential picks: OLB Darius Leonard (2.4), OT Connor Williams (2.18), OT Brian O’Neill (2.30)
