4 Ways to Improve the NY Giants’ Offense
Get Healthy
The most tangible issue that has contributed to the lack of offense this season has been the influx of injuries.
Will Hernandez
Nate Solder
Kyle Rudolph
Those are the only three starters on offense that haven’t missed time.
Add on Daniel Jones and Billy Price, and that gives you the only five players that have played over 55% of offensive snaps. To put this in perspective, the Eagles have had nine players play over 55% of snaps on offense, while the Cowboys have had ten offensive players play at least 70% of snaps.
Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, Kenny Golladay, Darius Slayton, and John Ross have all missed three games already this year. Additionally, Kadarius Toney has only seen significant offensive snaps in four games to this point, nursing several injuries himself.
It’s hard to put together a fluent offense and build chemistry when literally every significant player on offense has been unable to suit up for chunks of the year.
It seemed like the NY Giants’ offense may have turned in week 4 when mounted a miraculous comeback against the Saints, as Jones’ chemistry with Golladay and Toney appeared to be coming along. Barkley also found his footing as he hardly had a preseason to get comfortable with playing again following offseason surgery.
Then week 5 happened. Barkley rolled his ankle, Jones suffered a concussion, and Golladay got banged up again. To make matters worse, Shepard and Slayton were already sidelined with hamstring injuries.
Barkley’s availability is up in the air for Sunday, after testing positive for COVID-19 this week.
The offensive line, which was a weakness coming into the year, has only been ravaged by injuries, with center Nick Gates and left guard Shane Lemieux suffering season-ending injuries early on, and left tackle Andrew Thomas landing on IR just a couple of weeks ago after trying to play through an injury in week 6.
It’s no secret that injuries are part of football, but you’d be hard-pressed to find many teams that have endured injuries to eight of the 11 starters on offense, seven of which have missed multiple games just halfway into the season.
