Odell Beckham Jr. will always go down in NY Giants lore as a what could have been situation, might the star wide receiver have his chance at a New York return?
After three stellar seasons in New York, injuries and other issues derailed Odell Beckham’s career in the Big Apple, leading to a trade to the Cleveland Browns. Friday, the Browns moved on from Beckham, might the NY Giants explore a reunion?
Beckham has been released by Cleveland after inner turmoil and issues with the organization and quarterback Baker Mayfield, and the star receiver needs a new environment.
The hot commodity receiver will hit the waiver wire after his release, and the Giants hold the sixth spot in the waiver order behind the Jets, Jaguars, Texans, Dolphins, and Lions.
A reunion with the LSU product that made one of the most iconic catches in Giants and even NFL history is now on the table.
While unlikely considering the terms Beckham and the Giants left on, especially with the comments GM David Gettleman made after the trade.
Gettleman was asked after the trade if the NY Giants had a culture problem, “not anymore” Gettleman said.
Not only would Beckham have to get over the shade thrown by his former GM and decide to sign with the Giants, but Gettleman would also have to want to sign him in the first place.
The NY Giants are also not a contender as of now, which is something that Beckham would be drawn to.
According to FanSided NFL insider Matt Lombardo, league sources believe the New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, and New Orleans Saints might be the most likely landing spots for Beckham.
But, the NY Giants will remain in the conversation until he is signed, especially with their waiver position.
However, the 29-year-old Beckham will be looking for a major quarterback upgrade after struggling with Mayfield, and Daniel Jones is not elite as of yet.
Having a superstar receiver could be a piece that helps Jones get to the next level, but Beckham could just pair up with an Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes caliber player.
All things considered, it remains very unlikely either side would want to make this reunion happen, but on paper, it could be exciting.
Wide Receiver has been an issue for New York, and Beckham has plenty of talent to fix the injury-ridden situation the Giants find themselves in.
Beckham would immediately be the WR 1 for this team and could get back to his old ways of being a superstar.
It would take a complete mindset change from all parties involved, but Beckham will leave an immediate impact wherever he goes, the Giants included.
With the Giants sitting at 2-6 and at fourth in the NFC East, they need a jolt if they want to string some wins together, so claiming Beckham could be within the realm of possibility.
While that could do more harm than good when you factor in the Giants’ locker room, it is still worth the consideration considering his talent.
Beckham’s return to New York is not something to expect, but is at the very least, worth keeping an eye out for.
