Sam Beal, a disappointing former third-round pick in the supplemental draft, was released by the NY Giants Tuesday

The NY Giants released underperforming and oft-injured cornerback Sam Beal Tuesday, moving on from one of the bigger mistakes of Dave Gettleman’s tenure as general manager.

Beal, chosen by the NY Giants in the third-round of the 2018 supplemental draft, appeared in just nine games, producing 27 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and one safety.

Because the NY Giants chose Beal in the supplemental draft, Gettleman and the Giants forfeited a third-round choice the following spring in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Injuries, as much as poor performance, define his brief tenure in New York.

Beal effectively redshirted as a rookie in 2018, due to a shoulder injury that Gettleman and the NY Giants claim to have known about prior to selecting him. Then, Beal opted out of the 2020 season, when given the chance to amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In three games in 2021, Beal produced just one tackle.

Off the field Beal ran afoul of the law, when in 2020 he faced a pair of gun charges, as well as being cited for marijuani possession during a traffic stop.

This summer, Beal barely made the 53-man roster when he was running with the third-string defense through much of training camp, buried on an improved cornerback depth chart.

Beal never lived up to his billing as a third-round pick, and it is fair to wonder the caliber of player that Gettleman and the NY Giants might have had a chance to add the following spring, had the organization not flushed a third-round choice in the supplemental draft on Beal.
