NY Giants’ Disappointments #4: Evan Engram & Kyle Rudolph

This was supposed to be now or never for Evan Engram.

After missing two weeks to start the year, Engram’s career in New York was spiraling downwards fast.

In his return to the field, Engram came back with a typical drop, a fumble, and a loud encore of Boos every time he stepped on the field. The boos were met with even louder ovations every time Engram jogged off the field for a substitution or to take a break. That’s how bad and toxic his time and relationship had gotten in New York.

Engram has scored two touchdowns in consecutive weeks to quell down the trade rumors always following his name. However, he still isn’t and never will be the cover-2 breaker or seam buster the NY Giants hoped he’d be back in 2017. Engram has struggled with blocking, catching the ball in traffic or in open coverage, and then holding onto the ball once he catches it. It’s a legitimate problem and he’s often become a liability for this team’s careful approach on offense.

Kyle Rudolph was signed to help fix or alleviate all the above problems Engram brings to the field. The $12 million contract NY handed him seems misguided as Rudolph’s role has not called for a $6 million annual salary.

Rudolph was signed to help fix the red zone offense, provide veteran leadership and stability to the offense and Engram specifically, and he was seen as an expected security blanket for Daniel Jones to trust and rely on.  These things haven’t happened due to so many issues and shortcomings in the scheme, creation, design, and execution within the NY Giants’ offense.

The two tight ends have far too often made no true impact in the passing game much of this 2021 season. They have not been the dynamic pairing that should be able to complement one another and play well off each other.
