Leonard Williams among highest NFL cap hits in 2022 … Giants getting money’s worth?
NY Giants edge rusher Leonard Williams will count as one of the NFL’s highest-cap hits across the league next season, two years into a new contract
The NY Giants signed Leonard Williams to a long-term contract this past offseason, and the money on the edge rusher’s new deal is about to escalate. Significantly.
According to OverThe Cap, Williams is set to count as one of the highest cap hits among non-quarterbacks across the NFL in 2022:
Williams checking in as the seventh-highest cap number among non-quarterbacks in the NFL next season speaks to just how valuable a dominant edge presence has become in today’s game.
But, it is certainly noteworthy that Williams’ strong play from the second half of last season has continued through the first three months of the 2021 campaign.
Through the Giants‘ first 11 games, Williams has already produced seven sacks, 38 total pressures, and garnered a 74.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
Williams certainly appears entrenched as one of the NY Giants’ building blocks around the front-seven, and could push for the second double-digit season of his career and in as many seasons, playing under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
However, given the NY Giants’ limited cap space this coming offseason, it will be interesting to see whether the organization approaches Williams about restructuring his contract in an effort to create additional spending flexibility.
