Daniel Jones’ future with NY Giants murkier than ever
The NY Giants fired Jason Garrett but the team is getting no answers on the future with Daniel Jones out with another injury.
The worst thing that could happen to the NY Giants the rest of the season is if Daniel Jones has to miss significant time. That may be the reality New York now faces.
The Giants still don’t know if Jones is the future.
As of now, most people would probably say he’s not.
If you had to say whether he will be the guy next year for Big Blue, most people would say yes. But, the evaluation of Jones has been so hard for so many reasons.
When looking at situations it’s hard to say Jones hasn’t played in the worst QB situation in football over the last year and a half. Last year the NY Giants lost Saquon Barkley, had zero wide receiver help, and a terrible offensive line.
This year the whole offensive skill group has been injured, Barkley isn’t the same player, and the NY Giants offensive line is worse than ever.
Thanks to injuries the NY Giants are the only team in the NFL that doesn’t have a 400 yard receiver to this point. The play calling under Jason Garrett was archaic and outdated.
The NY Giants have seen everything from good, great, bad, and terrible QB play from Jones this season.
In a win over a top-rated Panthers defense, with a full set of practice squad wide receivers, Jones was great throwing for over 200 yards and a touchdown. In New Orleans, with his full set of weapons Jones had his best game going for over 400 yards, 2 two touchdowns, and orchestrating a game-tying and winning drive. In Washington, Jones was also great passing for 249 yards and rushing for 95. It could have been even better if not for a bad call on a Jones td run by the refs and a bad drop by Darius Slayton.
Those games seem like ancient history.
We are instead reminded of games like the one Jones had against the Bucs, where he didn’t top 200 yards and he threw two atrocious interceptions against a depleted secondary.
If you go through the game logs Jones actually has been more good than bad but he hasn’t elevated himself or the NY Giants. That’s what’s expected of so many of these young quarterbacks.
Daniel Jones will likely be the NY Giants’ starting Quarterback next season and has probably done enough to earn the opportunity one more time to cement his future.
However, the NY Giants need a healthy Jones back on the field sooner rather than later. It looks like GM Dave Gettleman is done after this year and the future on Head Coach Joe Judge isn’t clear. Which makes things unclear for Jones. None the less they need to see him in an offense other than Jason Garrett’s.
Jones turned the ball over a lot his rookie season but think about how much firepower he displayed under Pat Shurmur’s offense. 24 touchdowns in 12 games and 4 games with 4 or more total touchdowns. Under Garrett, he never did that once.
How Daniel Jones can cement his future as the NY Giants’ long-term answer
Jones needs one more chance with an offensive coordinator that can actually play to his strengths.
However, the case for Jones being the NY Giants starting QB next year gets murkier the longer he misses time and the more and more people the NY Giants fire or let go in the front office and coaching rooms.
The NY Giants have the most broken offense in football and it remains to be seen if it can be fixed with Jones at the helm.
With two high draft picks in the 2022 NFL draft the hope is the NY Giants can fix the offensive line and pass rush. The NY Giants shouldn’t give up on Kenny Golladay either. Give him one more chance with Jones, the new OC and Kadarius Toney in 2022 if Jones is to return.
