QB Daniel Jones
If Gettleman is fired, or retires, his successor is going to need to make a snap judgement on whether Daniel Jones is the NY Giants’ quarterback of the future.
Picking up Jones’ fifth-year option, which needs to be done this offseason barring a long-term extension, would cost the NY Giants approximately $21.3 million against the cap.
It would be a nearly catastrophic cap charge for a team with so little spending flexibility.
Already owning a pair of first-round draft choices, potentially as high as two selections in the top-five picks, the NY Giants could choose to roll the dice on trading Jones to put together a package to move up to select Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett, UNC’s Sam Howell, or any of the other rising quarterbacks to get a signal-caller on a rookie deal to restart the clock on paying at the position.
Given Jones’ production — along with his limitations in the red zone and inconsistent ball-security, it might be difficult for the NY Giants to fetch more than a third-round pick for Jones. Especially in a trade market that could include Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
But, the spending flexibility — $4.194 million in 2022, and additional draft capital might be enticing.
