Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles felt like rock bottom for the NY Giants, who were blown out by the Chargers and saw their playoff hopes all but evaporate

After a 21-37 loss to the Chargers, the NY Giants move to 4-9 on the season with seemingly no hope left.

After a horrid first half, where the NY Giants trailed 24-7 going into halftime, all seemed lost. The offense could not get a groove, the defense was getting torched, and the team seemingly had no direction.

While New York did make a small comeback, bringing the game to 37-21 after two garbage time touchdowns, it was not enough.

Plain and simple … the team is not good enough.

While yes, the NY Giants are dealing with myriad injuries, they have to do better.

here are grades for some NY Giants players and the teams MVP from this weeks game:

NY Giants QB Mike Glennon: C-

While Mike Glennon certainly did not have a very good game, he exceeded expectations.

Completing 17-of-36 passes for two passing touchdowns, one interception, and adding one carry for seven yards and a touchdown, with one fumble, Glennon’s stat line is unimpressive.

However, Glennon still struggled to make even the simplest of passes. Before we get to the bad, lets take a look at the good things Glennon did today.

Glennon’s touchdown came in the first quarter, after two failed drives in a row by the NY Giants. After delivering a beautiful 60 yard pass to Kyle Rudolph, the NY Giants were set up comfortably on the Chargers 5 yard line.

After a two-yard run up the middle by Saquon Barkley, Glennon took the snap, faked the run, and delivered a beautiful lob pass to FB Elijah Penny for the first receiving TD of his career.

After back-to-back scoreless quarters, Glennon would throw second 2nd TD of the game.

The NY Giants started on their own 25 yard line with 9:27 remaining in the 4th quarter. After a slow drive that ended with 4:33 remaining, Glennon took the snap on the Chargers 18 yard line, stepped back, looked up, and delivered a pass to Saquon Barkley for a TD. This was Barkley’s first TD since week 4 against the Saints.

Glennon’s final TD of the game came on a drive that started on the NY Giants 37 with 3:29 remaining in the 4th quarter. The NY Giants worked their way down the field until they got to the Chargers 7 yard line. This is when Mike Glennon did what no one thought was possible. He took the snap, and after seeing no one open, he took off on the left side and chugged his 6’7 232 pound body all the way to the end zone for the final TD of the game.

Now onto the bad.

As previously mentioned, Glennon struggled to make even the simplest of passes throughout the game, hence his 47 percent completion percentage. While this is almost to be expected from Mike Glennon, it is still horrible regardless.

While both of Glennon’s turnovers came while the NY Giants were down big time, that does not make them okay.

Glennon’s fumble came with 28 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter on 4th and 9. The NY Giants were desperate for points and decided to go for it on their own 49 yard line. Right tackle Nate Solder got obliterated off the line by Chargers star Joey Bosa, who then stripped Glennon, and recovered the fumble.

While it is easy to blame Nate Solder for letting Bosa through, as a veteran Glennon needs to have that pocket awareness to know that someone is coming. Especially considering that during the play Glennon looked towards Bosa’s direction.

Glennon’s interception came after the NY Giants recovered an onside kick with 1:18 remaining in the 4th quarter. The NY Giants seemingly had a good drive going after a 24 yard pass to Sterling Shepard set them up at the Chargers 26 yard line. However, this drive would end as on 2nd and 10 after a spike to stop the clock, Glennon took the snap, saw Sterling Shepard, and threw a pass that was well behind him, the pass was then tipped by Shepard, and caught by Nick Niemann.

While the pass was thrown behind Shepard, it certainly did not help that Sterling Shepard did not look back towards Glennon until the ball was essentially at him.

This game was certainly not Glennon’s worst, but it definitely was not a very good one for the backup QB.
