Sources: Two veteran executives in NY Giants’ sights if GM job comes open
If the NY Giants move on from Dave Gettleman, or the general manager retires, a pair of veteran personnel men could be in the mix for the top job in New York
Following Sunday’s reporting that the NY Giants intend to keep head coach Joe Judge and quarterback Daniel Jones in 2022, league sources tell FanSided that John Dorsey and Alonzo Highsmith are in New York’s sights as general manager, if Dave Gettleman retires or is fired after this season.
As FanSided previously reported, Dorsey — currently a Senior Personnel Executive for the Detroit Lions, hopes to interview for GMs jobs this offseason.
The former general manager of the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs, Dorsey drafted 16 Pro Bowlers into the NFL during his seven seasons at the helm of each franchise.
Meanwhile, Highsmith has never been a general manager but has spent the past two seasons as a personnel executive with the Seattle Seahawks after working under Ron Wolf and Ted Thompson as a Green Bay Packers senior personnel executive from 2012-2017.
The NY Giants have not made the postseason since 2016, and have had just one winning season since 2011. By contrast, teams that Highsmith has worked for have made six trips to the postseason.
Perhaps the biggest question for Dorsey, Highsmith, or any of the candidates the NY Giants interview, should the general manager position come open this offseason, is what the personnel men think of Judge and Jones. Especially if John Mara and the Giants indeed decide to move forward into 2022 with Judge and Jones in place.
