3 Major decisions NY Giants absolutely must get right this offseason
This offseason promises significant changes for the NY Giants, after a fifth consecutive losing season
For the NY Giants, something has to change.
Whether it is a change in leadership from the top down — moving on from general manager Dave Gettleman, or how to utilize a pair of top 10 picks in next spring’s NFL Draft, the organization faces myriad questions this offseason.
So it goes, for a franchise that has now clinched five consecutive losing seasons and hasn’t won a postseason game since winning the Super Bowl in 2011.
From Gettleman’s future to what to do at quarterback in 2022 and beyond, this is a crossroads offseason for the Giants.
Here are three decisions the NY Giants absolutely must get right this offseason:
Dave Gettleman’s replacement
Following reports earlier this month that Dave Gettleman is contemplating retiring by season’s end, but regardless, after overseeing four consecutive losing seasons and orchestrating a high-priced roster that is low on talent, the NY Giants would be better served by a new general manager taking over this offseason.
From conversations with team and league sources, it would seem the NY Giants remain committed to Joe Judge’s long-term vision and believe in his influence.
If Gettleman is no longer calling the shots, the feeling here is that Judge will have input over who replaces the embattled general manager.
Multiple league sources suggest John Dorsey is interested in a return to a general manager’s position, currently serving as a personnel executive with the Detroit Lions, and he could be a name to watch after the talent that he assembled during his time as the Chiefs and Browns’ GM.
But, someone like New England Patriots Director of Personnel, Dave Ziegler, could be a name to watch because of his ties to Judge. John Mara’s affinity for the New England Patriots is well documented, so Ziegler could be a dark horse.
Regardless of who is hired, the NY Giants must ensure that a forward-thinking, analytics driven approach arrives in East Rutherford with a fresh vision for how to compete in today’s NFL following the failures of Gettleman’s old school philosophies.
