Could Brian Flores, one of the hottest commodities on the coaching market wind up with the New York Giants?
Brian Flores is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after and hottest head coaching candidates available in the NFL right now.
Flores has already interviewed with the Bears and Texans since being surprisingly fired on ‘Black Monday’ last week. There has been widespread speculation that Flores may be the frontrunner for both gigs he’s already interviewed for in Houston & Chicago.
FanSided’s NFL Insider Matt Lombardo shared in his Between the Hashmarks weekly column that the Houston Texans are pressuring Flores to move on from QB Deshaun Watson if he joins the Lone Star State team:
"FanSided has learned through conversations with league sources that Brian Flores is at the top of the Houston Texans’ wishlist to fill the vacancy left behind by David Culley’s firing. However, according to sources, the organization is expected to stipulate to Flores that Deshaun Watson be traded. Therefore, Flores, who has eyed Watson since last season with the Miami Dolphins, would be forfeiting the opportunity to potentially work alongside his coveted quarterback if he takes the Texans job.Flores, though, is going to have options as arguably the most sought-after coaching candidate available.Meanwhile, Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen wrapped up his second interview with the New York Giants Tuesday for the organization’s general manager vacancy. It is entirely plausible that the Giants hire Flores, and then aggressively pursue a trade for Watson."
Texans moving off DeShaun Watson an opportunity for Brian Flores, New York Giants?
Moving on from Watson may be a huge problem and overall dealbreaker for Flores in Houston.
It’s been widely reported that Flores is enamored with teaming up with Watson as a 1-2 Head Coach-Quarterback package deal. Watson holds Flores in high regard and he also has been reported to be interested in teaming up with Flores as his next Head Coach.
Lombardo speculates that if Houston doesn’t let Flores keep Watson as his QB, the deal may be off for both sides of the equation. He also brings up that Flores should be a top candidate in New York with the NY Giants interviewing Joe Schoen. Schoen and Flores could make an intriguing combo as GM and Head Coach in New York.
While it seems unlikely that Deshaun Watson ends up in New York, the thought can’t be discounted if Flores does in fact land in the Big Apple. Flores is a New York native from Brooklyn so there will be mutual interest when the time comes for his interview.
