The New York Giants have limited cap space, and wide receiver isn’t exactly a position of need, which could mean John Ross hits NFL free agency
John Ross is set to become a free agent this offseason, and the combination of the New York Giants currently over the projected salary cap and the team’s plan to feature Kadarius Toney in an expanded role next season, there’s a good chance Ross will be lining up elsewhere in 2022.
In 2021, his first season in a Giants uniform, Ross caught 11 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown in 10 games of an injury-riddled campaign.
A former first-round pick, who has never quite lived up to those expectations, opinions on Ross inside the league are split as the 26-year-old approaches free agency.
“Some team will throw some money at him,” an NFC personnel executive tells FanSided, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely. “He plays a position that’s becoming a premium, and he has speed, speed, and more speed.”
But, even as teams are more flush with cap space than ever, with the salary cap expected to be set at approximately $208.2 million, some don’t think Ross will be anywhere close to the first receiver to find a new home.
“I just don’t see him commanding top dollar or having much of a market at all,” an NFL agent familiar with the wid receiver market tells FanSided. “Maybe some team will throw $1-2 million at him late in the game?”
So, where might Ross, who has caught 62 career passes for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns land?
here are five potential landing spots for New York Giants impending free-agent wide receiver John Ross;
5) Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have an offense that could be on the cusp of shifting into the next gear.
Already one of the NFL’s premier power-running games, built around running back Nick Chubb, a dominant offensive line, and consistent playmaking ability from tight end Austin Hooper, the Browns will likely set out to surround their quarterback — Baker Mayfield or otherwise, with weapons in the passing game this offseason.
Despite his injury history, Ross’ speed could throw open offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski’s playbook, and be an intriguing addition to the Browns’ vertical passing game.
