DB Julian Love

At the start of the 2022 season, Julian Love will be just 24 years old entering his fourth NFL season, all with the Giants after being selected in the 4th round of the 2019 draft out of Notre Dame.

Largely a rotational defensive back, having played mostly safety, Love hasn’t been bad necessarily, but it would also be a stretch to say he’s been good, too. He has been durable and versatile, which has proven to make him valuable given the Giants myriad of injuries, even if he hasn’t shined much on the field.

With the secondary being the Giants’ strongest position group, Love becomes a disposable piece. James Bradberry, Adoree’ Jackson and Logan Ryan are all under sizable deals, while Xavier McKinney, Darnay Holmes, Aaron Robinson and Rodarius Williams have either established themselves into larger roles than Love, and/or were drafted just last year.

By cutting Love, the Giants would save $2.54 million in cap space while eating just $192,715 in dead cap. With defensive coordinator Patrick Graham likely retaining his role, it’s entirely possible he has a significant influence on the defensive personnel roster-wise, which could be good news for Love. Despite that, cutting a depth piece in the final year of his rookie deal to save a few million is feasible enough to be in the cards for Schoen.

Plausibility: Somewhat High
