If the NY Giants trade back in Round 1, They should target these 3 players:
New York Giants Trade Back Target #2: EDGE Jermaine Johnson, FSU
It’s no secret that the New York Giants need a better pass rush and more overall playmaking from their front seven. If they want to attack the position early in the draft, Jermaine Johnson is a prime name to know if they trade back into round one.
Johnson is a 5-year college football player. He was academically ineligible for NCAA Division One football out of high school, so he started his college career at Independence Community College. ICC is a well-known JUCO and Johnson starred on the team when they were featured on NetFlix’s ‘Last Chance U’. Johnson dominated his JUCO ball over two years and got his grades together to be eligible to play NCAA football as he rightfully belonged.
He chose Georgia over other big-name offers such as Oklahoma, UCLA, and Texas. He racked up 36 tackles with 6.5 sacks and 7 tackles for a loss through two seasons with the Bulldogs. Johnson then transferred again to Florida State, where he truly shined and broke out in Tallahassee.
Johnson wreaked havoc in the ACC in his lone year in the conference. He was named the 2021 ACC Defensive Player of the year with 1st Team All-ACC honors and left a lasting mark on his college career. He was a beast with 11.5 sacks, 17 tackles for a loss, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown to go with 70 tackles. Johnson put together a complete year with high-impact plays all over the field in different-yet-equally impressive fashion.
Johnson was a menace all week for opposing offensive lineman matched up with him at the Senior Bowl last week. His play was eye-opening as he combined a quick-twitch burst off the edge with raw, explosive power and hand play that overwhelmed his competitors.
Johnson is going to be a fast riser amongst draft boards this offseason. Expect him to continue to be an ascending, rising player as we get closer to round 1. If the NY Giants trade back into the early to mid-range of the teens of the 1st round, they could end up selecting Jermaine Johnson.
