Veteran offensive tackle Nate Solder has played his final down in a New York Giants uniform, after his contract was automatically voided Wednesday

Nate Solder’s contract automatically voided Wednesday, effectively ending the veteran offensive tackle’s tenure with the New York Giants.

Because the Giants restructured Solder’s contract last fall, he will carry a $4 million dead-money charge against the cap this season.

Originally signed to a contract that made him the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL in 2018, Solder appeared in 48 games for the New York Giants, including returning in 2021 after opting out of the 2020 campaign.

This past season, Solder allowed six sacks and 36 total quarterback pressures in 192 offensive snaps.

As of Wednesday, the New York Giants currently sit approximately $12 million over the cap. Earlier this offseason, new Giants general manager Joe Schoen vowed to clear $40 million in new cap space. It is clear that Schoen will have his work cut out for him.

In all likelihood, Schoen and the New York Giants will need to add four new starters along the offensive line before the 2022 campaign begins.

This offseason, the New York Giants will likely prioritize drafting an offensive tackle to bookend Andrew Thomas, especially after former third-round draft choice Matt Peart’s underwhelming sophomore campaign in 2021.
