This is a pretty damning indictment of the New York Giants’ roster

The New York Giants’ impending free agents, aren’t viewed among the top available players ahead of the NFL’s new league year beginning

It’s safe to say that new New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has his work cut out for him.

Not only are the Giants currently projected to be approximately $10 million over the salary cap as the offseason begins, which means New York will likely be shedding money and veteran talent in coming weeks rather than aggressively shopping when the market opens next month, but the caliber of players currently set to be free agents off this roster isn’t very well regarded at all.

This week, Pro Football Focus released its list of the top 200 players set to become unrestricted free agents, and the New York Giants did not have a player listed among the top 25, or the top 50 players.

Tight end Evan Engram, most likely headed elsewhere this offseason, was the first New York Giants player list, at No. 73 on the list.

A worthwhile view of the quality of an NFL roster is what other teams think of it. That barometer will have to wait until free agency begins, and whether Engram, Jabrill Peppers, Lorenzo Carter or any of the New York Giants’ impending free agents wind up signing elsewhere, and for what kind of contract.

Here’s how PFF lists the New York Giants’ impending free agents in its top-200:

No. 73 – Evan Engram, TE

No. 134 – Jabrill Peppers, S

No. 150 – Nate Solder, OT

No. 179 – Lorenzo Carter, EDGE

Schoen will need to work to get under the salary cap before the new league year begins on March 16, so it would seem unlikely any of the New York Giants’ top free agents return, but will be far more interesting to see how the league views them when free agency begins.
