The New York Giants will release veteran tight end Kyle Rudolph, in a move to create cap space as the 2022 NFL offseason gets underway

The New York Giants plan to release Kyle Rudolph Wednesday, sources tell FanSided.

According to sources, the Giants informed Rudolph Wednesday morning that he will be released, and the move will be come official later in the day.

Moving on from Rudolph is likely the first of many moves to come from new general manager Joe Schoen, in an effort to create cap space, as New York currently sits approximately $12 million over the cap as the NFL offseason begins.

Wednesday’s move will create $5 million in new cap space, and releasing Rudolph will also trigger a $2.4 million dead-money charge.

Given the New York Giants’ dire cap situation, Rudolph was among the more likely veterans to get cut by the first-year general manager.

Rudolph was signed by former New York Giants general manager Kyle Rudolph last offseason, and was a virtual non-factor in the offense during his lone season in East Rutherford. Last season, Rudolph caught just 26 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown.

The New York Giants had hoped that Rudolph would give the red zone offense a boost, but instead remained one of the least productive red-zone offenses in the NFL last season.
