NFL Draft: Ranking New York Giants’ Round 1 offensive linemen targets
No. 7: OG Zion Johnson, Boston College
While it remains to be seen if Zion Johnson will be selected in the first round, I have seen more and more mock drafts have Johnson get selected towards the end of the first round or very early in the second.
Johnson is a prospect who makes it easy to see why his draft stock is surging.
Unlike Kenyon Green, Zion Johnson has the ability to be extremely successful in both, gaining a pass blocking grade of 81.6, alongside a run blocking grade of 84.4 per, PFF.
The part of Johnsons game that should excite teams the most is his abilities in pass blocking snaps, as this is something the New York Giants Giants are in desperate need of.
Johnson’s ability to diagnose different defensive stunts is something that former guard Will Hernandez was never capable of doing. Outside of that, Zion Johnson has a very strong base, alongside great hand and foot technique that allow him to be dominant in pass blocking.
Not only is Johnson a dominant pass blocker, but he is arguably just as good of a run blocker, using his great strength, athleticism, and hands to make life a living nightmare for opposing defenders.
The only weaknesses I could really find in Johnsons game is that he sometimes has issues redirecting his body in pass blocking snaps, making it difficult for him to pick up on defenders if they beat the tackle or center.
