NFL Draft: Ranking New York Giants’ Round 1 offensive linemen targets
No. 5: OT Trevor Penning, Northern Iowa University
Trevor Penning is a very interesting prospect.
Looking at Penning’s PFF grades, you would think he’s the best offensive line prospect of all time, gaining a pass blocking grade of 87.0, alongside an unbelievable run blocking grade of 99.9 per, PFF. However, when you take a look at Penning’s competition you begin to understand why these grades are so high.
Northern Iowa university plays in the FCS, a sub-division of D-1 athletics, meaning the competition he faced was not really up to par. However, if you watch Penning play, you can see just why he was able to be so dominant.
Coming in at 6-foot-7 and 321 pounds, Trevor Penning uses his massive frame and size to dominate opposing defenders in both pass and run blocking snaps. While he can be a bit sluggish at times, he is able to make up for it due to his ridiculous reach and strength.
Another issue that pops up with Penning is his hand technique, while it certainly isn’t bad, it could use some work. There are far too many times in which Penning does not reset his hands while blocking, causing him to get beat.
If Trevor Penning’s domination can translate to the next level, he will be an immediate impact player, however, the lack of competition Penning played against is severely limiting his draft stock.
