The New York Giants restructured Blake Martinez’s contract, in order to create cap space ahead of the 2022 NFL season

Blake Martinez will return to the New York Giants for the 2022 season, after his contract was restructured Friday.

News of Martinez‘s reworked deal was first reported by Jordan Schultz.

Why New York Giants brought Blake Martinez back

Martinez, 28, is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered Week 3 of last season against the Atlanta Falcons.

One of the Giants‘ most respected locker room leaders, and consistent defenders, bringing Martinez back on a deal that lowered his cap-hit in 2022 benefits the New York Giants both in terms of creating spending flexibility and Don “Wink” Martindale’s defense.

Signed as a free agent prior to the 2020 campaign, Martinez has produced 174 total tackles with three sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery since his arrival in East Rutherford.

So far this week, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has also restructured wide receiver Sterling Shepard’s contract, released punter Riley Dixon, in addition to restructuring Martinez’s contract. As FanSided reported Friday, the Giants have had no conversations with defensive lineman Leonard Williams about restructuring his contract.

The new NFL league year begins on Wednesday at 4p.m.
