Round 6, Pick No. 188: James Mitchell, TE, Virginia Tech

With the loss of Evan Engram, the New York Giants are likely to take at least one tight end in this year’s draft.

We end up with two, as Mitchell is the best player available with this pick and Deese may not end up being a conventional tight end at the professional level, anyway.

At this point in his career, Mitchell is more effective with the ball in his hands than he is as a route runner, so he’s probably an immediate weapon on tight end screens and quick hitters. If he can improve his route running, he could develop into the total package as a pass-catching tight end.

His blocking game can also use some improvement. But, he’s got the hands and athleticism, and those things can’t really be taught or developed as easily as the route running and blocking. He’s got the chance to develop into a solid #2 TE in the not-too-distant future, and maybe in a few years, he’s a capable starter.
