Round 2, Pick No. 36: Nik Bonitto, EDGE, Oklahoma

We made an attempt to move back to pick number 38 here, but despite being interested in the pick, the Jets weren’t willing to give up pick number 111 or 117 to slide up two spots.

Understandable, I wouldn’t in their position, either.

The offer was put on the table because I would have been happy with either Bonitto or Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker, and thus was hoping to acquire some additional draft capital. But it didn’t work out this time.

Bonitto should be a good fit in Martingale’s aggressive, blitzing defense. He’s a versatile EDGE player who can rush the passer, as evidenced by his 16 sacks over the last two seasons at Oklahoma. But he’s also solid against the run and can drop into coverage.

He’s 6’3″ and weighs in at 248 pounds but still manages to reel off a 4.54 40 yard dash, and NFL.com calls him a “wildly athletic rusher who blends get-off, stride length, and flexibility.”
