Illinois defensive back Kerby Joseph (25) intercepts the ball in the end zone during the third quarter of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind. Joseph finds himself in the mix to battle for a starting job in New York after going in the third round in this New York Giants mock draft. /

Round 3, Pick No. 67: Kerby Joseph, S, Illinois

With the New York Giants parting ways with Logan Ryan, it appears the safety positions will be turned over to Xavier McKinney and Julian Love, but there’s always room for competition.

Joseph reads as someone who could develop into a weapon at the safety position. His NFL Draft Buzz scouting report touts his ball-hawking abilities, press and zone coverage, and blitzing abilities. They also call him “an elite run defender who wraps up nicely and regularly knives into the backfield.”

At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, he’s slightly taller than an Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins, or Troy Polamalu prototype, and could add 10-15 pounds of muscle. Joseph has a 40-time a bit faster than Dawkins and Reed, but not as fast as Polamalu.

Joseph’s versatility brings those types of players to mind. Of course, it’s a huge question whether he can ever be that good, but perhaps Don Martingale finds his stud safety of the future in the third round this year?
