NFL Draft: New York Giants’ best tight end fits for Brian Daboll’s offense
Trey McBride, Colorado State:
It is likely that the New York Giants will look to draft a tight end in rounds 3-7, and with that being said, there is a good chance that Trey McBride is selected by then.
However, if he manages to fall to the third round, the NY Giants may want to consider drafting him.
Coming in at 6-foot-3 and 249 pounds, McBride dominated this season at Colorado State as both a receiver, and a blocker. In 12 games played, Trey McBride caught 91 passes for 1,125 yards, and one touchdown. In addition to this, he also gained a run-blocking grade of 69.3 and a pass-blocking grade of 75.8.
Similar to Likely, McBride has some things to work on as a blocker. However, I am very confident in his ability to improve.
This is where the similarities to Likely end, however, in terms of receiving they are very different players. Trey McBride is not nearly the open field runner and red zone threat that Isaiah Likely is. Trey McBride’s strength lies in his ability as a short-yard receiver. Watching his highlights, McBride was mostly used in rollout plays where he would either run over the middle of the field, or off the line of scrimmage and towards the sideline.
While he is not nearly the big-play threat that Isaiah Likely is, he is a much more consistent threat with a bigger route tree. I may not be as high on McBride as I am on Isaiah Likely, but I do believe he has the highest floor out of all the tight ends in this year’s draft. He would be a great fit in this new Brian Daboll offense.
