NY Giants Day 3 Draft Target: Calvin Austin Jr., WR, Memphis

One thing the Giants’ wide receiver group has lacked for the majority of the last decade is speed. Outside of Kadarius Toney, the Giants’ wide receiver room does not have someone whose strength is using their speed to produce yards after the catch.

Calvin Austin Jr., a wideout from Memphis, would give the Giants the speed they need. At the 2022 NFL Combine, Austin Jr. ran a blazing 4.32 40-yard dash. Austin Jr.’s on-field production is undeniable, with over 2,000 yards receiving and 19 touchdowns in his last two collegiate seasons, including a memorable 55-50 win at Arkansas State last September in which he had just six catches, but produced 239 receiving yards, and three touchdowns.

The Memphis alum’s speed has allowed him to also become a dynamic punt returner, taking one to the house in each of the last two seasons. The Giants have long craved this type of punt returner. Austin Jr.’s size, just 5’7, 170 pounds, has knocked him down draft boards, but his speed and versatility alone are worthy of a Round 3 or 4 pick.
