Top 3 reasons why the NY Giants must draft Ikem Ekwonu
By Reese Nasser
1). Elite run blocker
The area of Ekwonu’s game that will need the least amount of work at the next level is his ability as a run blocker. He has separated himself from every other offensive line prospect in this category. Ekwonu recorded 953 run-blocking snaps in his three years as a starter. He also finished the season with a run-blocking grade of 93.8 according to PFF. This grade was the fifth-best in all of the FBS.
Throughout his final season, Ekwonu also posted a run-blocking grade of at least 80.0 in nine of his 13 games. He finished with grades of at least 90 in three of their games. His most notable performance came against Florida State and their star pass rusher Jermaine Johnson. He recorded his second-best run-blocking performance of the season with a grade of 91.2
There is no reason to think that Ekwonu won’t still be effective in the run blocking game at the next level. With the Giants bringing running back Saquon Barkley back this season, it would make sense for them to try and build the best-run blocking unit they can. By adding Ekwonu, they would be doing just that.
