Should the NY Giants draft a quarterback on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft?
By Zak Musso
Only one quarterback was selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, tied for the least amount in the last twenty years, but just because the quarterbacks are still available does not mean the NY Giants should consider selecting one.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted the Pittsburgh kid Kenny Pickett with the 20th pick in the draft, it felt like it may trigger a run on quarterbacks, which obviously did not happen. This leaves plenty of intriguing quarterbacks available to be selected on Day 2 of this year’s draft.
There are still good quarterbacks including Malik Willis of Liberty and Matt Corral of Mississippi, two guys who made the trek to Las Vegas and endured four painful hours of not hearing their names called. Sam Howell of North Carolina, and Desmond Ridder of Cincinnati, are two other signal-callers who are going to be selected on Day 2.
The NY Giants should not select a quarterback on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft
That begs the question, with four intriguing signal callers still on the board on Day 2, is it worth the Giants selecting one? The answer – it’s unequivocally not. The Giants need to prevent history from repeating itself. The biggest mistake a front office can make is forcing a pick in a position that needs an upgrade, something the Giants did in 2019.
In 2019, the Giants front office knew that Eli Manning’s career was running out of gas, and reached on Daniel Jones with the sixth pick in a weak quarterback draft because the franchise needed a new signal-caller immediately.
If the Giants had just taken the best player available in the 2019 draft instead of reaching for Jones, they could have selected a significantly better quarterback in the quarterback rich 2020 NFL draft that included Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, the latter of whom was available when the Giants were on the clock.
Next year’s draft class is loaded at the quarterback position, led by Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud. Another question mark with these quarterbacks, are any of them an upgrade over Jones both now and or in the future? Earlier this year, Daniel Jeremiah on Move the Sticks podcast, said Jones is a better option than all 2022 quarterback class.
I wholeheartedly agree with Jeremiah. Ridder, Howell, and Corral all have some concerning traits, and sustained periods of inconsistent player, and don’t have the same caliber of physique, IQ, or athleticism as Jones. Willis however, is the only one of the available quarterbacks who could challenge Jones in terms of ability, thanks to his elite athleticism and arm strength, but he has significant question marks.
In his career at Liberty, Willis played against poor competition and struggled in multiple games against teams without an NFL-caliber player. In a game against Louisiana-Monroe earlier this season, Willis was 16 for 28, with 135 yards and three interceptions, and he also threw three interceptions in a game against Middle Tennessee. While he undoubtedly has intriguing traits and intangibles, he does not fit the Giants’ timeline or current needs.
While all the quarterbacks still available have upside, there is no reason for Joe Schoen to force this pick. The Giants should and will stick with Jones this season, and if he plays well the job is his moving forward, and if not they will have an early pick in 2023 and draft a QB in a loaded class.
