NY Giants must draft Perrion Winfrey on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft

With the final day of the 2022 NFL Draft approaching, it is time for the NY Giants to hand in their final selections. As things currently stand, the Giants own 6 picks in Rounds 4-7. Meaning that there is plenty of room to still improve the current roster.

There are still many positions of need that have yet to be filled. Whether it be linebacker, tight end, defensive tackle, or safety, there is still a chance that the Giants can land a stud with one of these picks.

I believe a “must draft” candidate for the Giants early in the final 3 rounds is defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey out of Oklahoma. According to ESPN, Winfrey is the second-best prospect left in the entire draft.

Coming in at 6’4, 290 pounds, Winfrey had a very solid season at Oklahoma. In 12 games played this season, Winfrey tallied 23 tackles, with 11 of them going for a loss, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 17 QB hurries.

While these stats may not be the most eye-popping, he showed a ton of potential as a run stopper. Something the Giants desperately need as last season the defense ranked 8th in rushing yards allowed, and 17th in rushing TDs allowed.

However, the simplest reason the Giants should draft Winfrey is due to positional need. The current defensive tackle room for the Giants is looking quite small. The top two DTs on the team are Dexter Lawrence and David Moa. If the Giants decide to draft Winfrey, it is likely that he will see a lot of opportunities on the field, which would be very good for his development.

Winfrey is a very explosive, and powerful DT with tremendous upside to getting better. As a former Junior College recruit, Winfrey has had to put in a ton of work to become as good as he is today. This will likely translate to the NFL, meaning he will always be playing to the end of the snap and will constantly be looking to get better, just like he did in college.

While it may take some time for Winfrey to develop into a better player than he currently is. I believe he has all of the tools and traits to become a very good DT for the Giants if they give him the chance.
