Brian Daboll still has faith in Daniel Jones even if NY Giants fans don’t
With the NY Giants not exercising the fifth-year option on quarterback Daniel Jones, countless fans out there have basically written Jones off. The feeling among plenty of people here is that Jones may be the starter for 2022, but there’s no way he’ll be back in 2023.
Don’t tell that to Giants head coach Brian Daboll, though. In speaking about the signal-caller, Daboll made it quite clear he’s still got all the faith in the world in the former first-round pick. Yes, Jones hasn’t lived up to the hype just yet, but Daboll is ready to see what he can do moving forward.
Brian Daboll has full belief in Daniel Jones as the NY Giants quarterback
While speaking on New York’s WFAN Sports Radio, Daboll was on with Brandon Tierney and Giants legend Tiki Barber. Daboll said he wants Jones to be ‘himself’ and take shots without worrying about his job.
This tells you that Daboll understands Jones might enter the campaign with a little bit of worry, especially after the team didn’t pick up that fifth-year option. Folks think that Jones might let his uncertain future get to him, but Daboll has no worries about this happening.
Instead, the Giants head man is ready for Jones to have a bounce-back campaign in 2022. Last season, a neck injury sidelined him for the majority of the year, making the fall and winter that much worse for the G-Men. Jones was limited to just 11 starts, throwing for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Those aren’t the kinds of numbers you’d expect from a former No. 6 overall pick (2019). From the moment he was selected by New York, the Giants faithful dreamed of Jones not only balling out for the team, but potentially getting the organization back to the Super Bowl.
Both Jones and Saquon Barkley were expected to bring back a winning culture, but the opposite has been the case. Barkley looked like a shadow of his former self last season after coming back from his torn ACL. The running back is also in desperate need of a big year in 2022.
All in all, the New York offense needs to wake up and the pressure will be on Jones to get things on track. The majority of fans might be doubting him leading up to Week 1, but that’s not the case for Daboll. He’s ready to see what Jones can do and he’ll be ready to help him out in any way possible.
