With the 2022 NFL Draft done and over with, it’s time to analyze some of the picks made by the NY Giants. While it is certainly way too early to call a pick the ‘worst’ because we simply do not know how any of these players will pan out, you can still look at some guys who were selected by and determine whether or not the front office reached.

From our chair, there’s one player in particular who we believe came in at the wrong time for the G-Men.

The NY Giants definitely reached for tight end Daniel Bellinger

While there’s strong belief that Daniel Bellinger could turn out to be a solid player for the Giants, especially as a blocker, there was another tight end the Giants could have gone with: Coastal Carolina product Isaiah Likely, who fell to the Baltimore Ravens later in the fourth round. While Bellinger is a better blocker than Likely right now, Likely still has some upside in that aspect of his game.

Likely puts a ton of effort in as a blocker. However, his technique is not necessarily the best. Despite this, the difference between the two TEs as receivers is what made the Bellinger selection so questionable. As good of a blocker as Bellinger is compared to Likely, the difference between the two as receivers is quite head-turning.

In 12 games played this season, Bellinger caught 31 passes on 43 targets for 353 yards and two touchdowns. Likely caught 59 passes on 77 targets for 912 yards and 12 scores. That’s downright impressive.

Likely is a much more consistent and dynamic receiver than Bellinger, and would likely bring a ton of versatility to the Giants offense as a pass catcher. While we understand that the NY Giants have been in need of a blocking TE for a while, Likely simply would have more sense over Bellinger in this case.

With all of that said, Bellinger has a ton of upside as a two-way TE. He may not have the upside as Likely, but Bellinger very could could end up being a better fit for this offense. Keep in mind that when we call Bellinger the ‘worst’ pick by the NY Giants, that doesn’t mean the team’s new tight end won’t surprise plenty of folks. However, fans could have been much happier with a player of Likely’s caliber over Bellinger.
