Just when you thought the Baker Mayfield to the NY Giants rumors were over, things have suddenly picked up over the last few days. Could general manager Joe Schoen actually surprise the football world and bring in the former No. 1 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns to the NFC East? That remains to be seen, but people in the Tri-state area don’t want it.
Don’t tell that to NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah, though, as he thinks a Mayfield move to New York would not only make a ton of sense, but he thinks it’s something Schoen should highly consider. Will something end up going down?
Do Giants fans want the team to go after Baker Mayfield or ride with Daniel Jones for 2022? https://t.co/x9NHT067ex

An NY Giants move for Baker Mayfield would rock the NFL world
“The team I thought of was the Giants,” Jeremiah said via 247Sports. “It’s like, okay, you don’t pick up the fifth-year option on Daniel Jones. I just think, if you want to have a competition, maybe that gets the best out of Daniel Jones or maybe Baker Mayfield comes in there, flat out beats him out, and off you go.
“I know they have Tyrod Taylor there as well, but I would say based off accomplishments at their best in the league, Baker Mayfield has played at a higher level than those two guys have. That was the one team that stood out to me. Now, maybe Brian Daboll and first-year GM Joe Schoen don’t want to deal with a quarterback controversy, so to speak, but you could make a strong case he could win that job.”
As you can see from that quote, Jeremiah is quite adamant that Mayfield could make quite the difference in East Rutherford. There’s several moving parts that would need to go down for Mayfield to join the Giants, however. For starters, there’s just no way New York could pull off a trade for Mayfield. While a late-round pick could be enough for the Browns, New York wouldn’t be able to afford Mayfield’s cap hit for 2021 of $18.8 million.
The hope would be that the Browns end up releasing Mayfield. If he does become a free agent – which is up in the air – then the Giants could try and sign Mayfield to a deal that makes sense for both sides. Still, New York doesn’t have a ton of money available. This is why the team is getting ready to release James Bradberry.
In taking a look on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, the NY Giants fanbase is ready to support quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones didn’t get his fifth-year option picked up, so this could be his final season with the team. Who knows, maybe the Mayfield speculation will provide some extra motivation for him and he goes on to have a huge year in 2022. The NY supporters would love seeing it. What they don’t love seeing are these Mayfield rumors getting fired up again.
